In the 50s and 60s schoolchildren in poor health were send to the Egmond  municipality to recover and to gain strength in several "settlement houses". 

The municipality of Egmond comprises beside the old fishing village Egmond aan Zee, with its quiet and typical Dutch houses, the villages of Egmond Binnen and Egmond aan den Hoef.

Egmond Binnen

in the village Egmond Binnen you’ll find the far beyond  the  borders  famous Abbey of Egmond. This original abbey from the 10th century was the starting point for the Christianization of Europe. In this new abbey, rebuilt in 1934, are the Benedict Monks still working until today. The Abbey Museum gives an insight into the pottery and candle factory. In Egmond Binnen you will also find a picturesque church, which is well worth a visit.

Egmond aan den Hoef

In the village Egmond aan den Hoef ever resided the Count of Egmont. From this once great “Waterlocked” Castle is currently only about a ruin left, but this is also worth a visit.

Sightseeing in and around Egmond aan Zee

The historic village of Egmond aan Zee has some remarkable attractions. There is the "Museum of Egmont," and of course the Lighthouse of JCJ Speijk since 1834, which on Friday night in the season and regularly on display. And of course the North Holland Dune Reserve a nature reserve with natural dunes. Access only with a "Dune Map" and until sunset. Then there are the abbey, the monasteries and picturesque church and the ruins of Egmond Castle.

For lovers of culture and nightlife 

Egmond aan Zee has also much to offer. In the village you will find many cafes and restaurants, and pubs for evenings to go out. During the summer months on Wednesday afternoon there is a weekly  street fair and on Sunday afternoon the “walk to the pump” festival at  the  “pump-square” in the middle of the center, with live music, so that you can fully enjoy the many terraces. Throughout the year, all shops in the mall  are also  opened every Sunday.
